Dr. Dale interviews Dr. Earl Chism, a pediatric resident at UCSF, about his experiences in medicine and his journey to becoming a doctor. They discuss the intensity of witnessing a code, the difference between seeing medicine on TV versus experiencing it in person, and the responsibility that comes with wearing a long white coat. They also touch on the importance of legacy in medicine, both in terms of family legacy and the legacy of black doctors. Dr. Chism shares his own experience of having a mother who is a doctor and how it influenced his decision to pursue medicine. Dr. Earl Chism discusses his journey from college athlete to pediatrician and the importance of positive affirmations and representation in medicine. He shares how being a college athlete taught him teamwork and collaboration, skills that translate to his work in medicine. Dr. Chism also talks about the challenges he has faced as a Black physician and the importance of creating a legacy. He emphasizes the power of positive affirmations and the impact they can have on one’s mindset and success. Dr. Chism’s grandfather, who was the first Black firefighter in San Francisco, has been a source of inspiration and encouragement throughout his journey.
